Michael listened into the phone, holding his breath. Finally someone picked up, it was Brenda.
"Hello?" She said quietly.
"It's me, Michael.."
"What do you want...?" She asked.
Michael sighed, she was making it hard for him already. He heard glass shatter in the background and a screaming voice, "What is all that?" He asked.
Brenda took a deep breath, "Nothing what do you want?" She said quickly.
Michael tried to get passed it, he kept hearing all the noise in the background, Brenda cleared her throat to allow it to go over all of the noise. "Michael what?" She asked.
"Um, I just called you to tell you that-" He was cut off by Mr. Talia, he sounded angry and obnoxious.
"Brenda get the hell off the phone! Pack your stuff we're leaving!" He shouted.
"I'm not going anywhere dad leave me alone, I'm an adult!" Brenda shouted back. Michael jumped a little, her screaming rang right through his ears.
"You're not an adult! Get your stuff and let's go! NOW!" He shouted and slammed the door.
"I'M RUNNING AWAY I HATE YOU!! I DON'T EVER WANNA TALK TO YOU OR MOTHER AGAIN!" Brenda screamed, Michael could hear her crying. She was furious.
"Brenda is everything okay what's going on?" Michael asked.
"Just don't worry about it okay, we're not friends... Bye.." She hung up. Michael looked outside, it was pitch black and it was nearly eleven o'clock at night. Wherever Brenda was going he didn't want her to be there alone. Anything could happen. And weather they were friends or not he wasn't gonna just let it happen. He grabbed his pink pullover sweatshirt and put it on over his plaid collar shirt.
"Mother I'll be back!" He shouted down the hall.
"Where are you going?" She asked.
"To.. Hang out with Brenda!" He quickly said, he didn't know how to explain himself quick enough.
He drove around the nearby area between where they lived. He didn't see her anywhere, hoping that she'd changed her mind and just stayed where she was he looked through each mirror. Brenda was always doing something stupid for him to get her out of it. He wanted to just tell her off about it one good time, though he knew she'd be upset and probably never speak to him ever again.
He saw a shaddow sitting at the bus stop, it was a womanly figure. He drove slowly passed it to see if it was Brenda, it was her. He could tell her from anywhere. He pulled up, she looked at him and sighed angrily. Here we go again, he thought.
"Michael go home!" Brenda shouted.
"Brenda, get in the car..."
"Stop worrying about me okay! I don't have to listen to you and you don't have to come try and rescue me all the time, Michael!" she said.
"Brenda I'm being a good friend, and I don't care if you say we're not friends, in my heart we will always be..." Michael said. Brenda sighed frustratedly, she looked around, grabbed her bags and got in the car. Michael tried not to smile, he was happy to be in her presence again. She slammed the door and didn't say anything. Neither did Michael, he didn't know what to say.
"What happened?" Michael finally asked.
Brenda sighed and pushed her hair out of her face, "My mother was having an affair with dad's friend Lary,"
Michael gasped a little, he tried not to make a big deal. "Oh my God..." He had the urge to ask about a thousand questions but he thought he should hold off.
"I know right..." Brenda shook her head, she was upset. Michael hadn't seen her so angry before. "And dad thought he was gonna take me to Ohio with him but I refused, I don't wanna go. My whole life is here,"
Michael finally started the car, "Yeah what about all of your hard work in college and everything?" Michael asked.
"Exactly..." Brenda looked out of the window. Michael tried to change the subject to make her feel better, "Are you.. Hungry?" He asked.
Brenda thought, "Not really.."
"Thirsty?" He asked.
"No..."
"Oh okay... I was gonna take you... To dinner or something." Michael said, she looked at him and laughed a little. "A friendly dinner.. A dinner as a friend, a nondate dinner... A dinner-"
"Michael were you trying to ask me on a date?" Brenda smiled. Michael felt a little embarrassed.
"No it just sort of came out that way," Michael laughed it off.
"Oh... Okay," She looked back out of the window, slightly disapointed. There was a long silence.
"Umm, so when I called you... I was calling to tell you that I apologize for whatever reason we can't be friends, and to tell you that I care about you and that I atleast just wanna keep in contact with you," Michael said.
Brenda smiled, "We can be friends... I missed you," She pushed his shoulder softly. Michael smiled, he couldn't hold it anymore.
"So... Want me to take you home?" He asked.
"I really don't wanna go home..." Brenda sighed, "Do you have anything to do tomorrow?"
Michael thought for a moment, "No... Tomorrow's a free day for me,"
"We should do something crazy..." She smiled anxiously. Michael looked at her, "Like what?"
"...Like... Run away for just a day," She whispered, "No one will know where we are and we'll just be together," She smiled again.
Michael liked the idea, he was just afraid. He'd never truely taken off without a single person knowing where he was before. "Where will we go?" He asked.
